New Work | New Website

August 12, 2014

New Work | New WebsiteAfter many months of working in the studio, I’m pleased to announce a new body of work today, featuring colour floral portraits.  This new series is being launched through my new website, which also goes live today.  It’s been a busy year!

In this digitally connected world, where a wide range of platforms are used to access the internet – from desktop PCs to tablets computers to mobile phones – I considered it to be very important that using my website and viewing the work be a user-friendly, content-rich experience, but still making sure that the emphasis is on the work.

I felt that after working on the more sombre black and white series Petalum, it was time to look at producing a series which could be seen as being the opposite in style and tone – light, airy and colourful.  Considering that so much of my previous work has been in monochrome, I have to say that working in colour has been an enjoyable experience, but at the same time I’ve had to work at ensuring that colour didn’t take centre stage; I considered it to be an equal component of each image and that it shouldn’t overwhelm the other elements that comprised each study.

It’s my intention that this is the start of an ongoing series of colour floral studies, so more to come!

The blog you’re currently viewing has now been replaced by the News page on the new website, so this post will be the last entry on this blog.  If you pay a visit to the new site and subscribe – via RSS, Facebook, Twitter and other social media – you’ll be the first to receive updates on my new work, exhibitions and all the other news.

Thanks for your interest and looking forward to seeing you over at the new website.

BIPP Professional Photography Awards 2013

December 10, 2013

BIPP Photographer of the Year 2013

Last Wednesday, 4th December, I attended the British Institute of Professional Photography “Professional Photographic Awards 2013” at Hartwell House, near Aylesbury, UK, and I’m very pleased to announce that I received the Gold Award in Visual Arts and also Photographer of the Year 2013, both for my new series of five images, “Equilibrium”.

I had the great fortune to receive this prestigious award in 2010, but to be awarded this title twice is quite overwhelming!

The BIPP Awards website, which features all of the winners’ work, can be viewed at: www.bipp.com/awards

I am very honoured to receive these awards and my sincere thanks go to the BIPP judges for selecting my work.

From the BIPP Press Release:

Fine-Art Photographer Named ‘Photographer of the Year’ at Professional Photography Awards 2013

Eastern England based photographer, Paul Coghlin FBIPP, has been named ‘Photographer of the Year 2013’ at the BIPP Professional Photography Awards held at Hartwell House in Buckinghamshire, UK, on Wednesday 4 December.

Paul Coghlin FBIPP was named ‘BIPP Photographer of the Year 2013’ for his portfolio of 5 images ‘Equilibrium’ in the Visual Arts category, for which he also received a Gold Award. This is the second time Paul has won this prestigious title, having previously held ‘BIPP Photographer of the Year 2010’.

The BIPP Professional Photography Awards are open to professional photographers who are members of the BIPP, the leading qualifying body of the photographic profession, and celebrate the very best work from the UK and internationally.

The celebration at Hartwell House highlighted the BIPP South East Regional Awards, the Professional Photography Awards, and showcased the exceptional images seen throughout the year in BIPP photographic qualifications. The event culminated in the presentation of the BIPP Photographer of the Year 2013 and the Peter Grugeon Best Fellowship Award 2013.

BIPP President Roy Meiklejon said ‘It is an honour to acknowledge the achievements, pure skill and dedication of professional photographers. Those who have received awards produced some beautiful and original images which truly stood out from the crowd and encompassed what being a professional photographer is really about.’

I’ve been updating my website a little over the last few weeks and a significant change that has been made is to the homepage address.  The new homepage is “www.paulcoghlin.com“, which is shorter and snappier!

Meanwhile, I’m currently working on a couple of new projects, and I’m hoping to be able to release new images from these soon.  Watch this space…

Over here in the UK, the March 2013 edition of Photography Monthly magazine has a five-page interview feature on “Petalum“, illustrated with many images from the from the thirty-print botanical series.  In addition to the flowers, the article also includes a number of my personal favourite images from recent years.

Available, as they say, from all good UK bookshops and newsagents.

“Petalum” exhibition, 1 February – 4 March 2013

My new botanical series – “Petalum” – is currently on show until 4th March 2013 at the new “Fine & Contemporary” Gallery in Clare, Suffolk, UK.

The thirty monochrome prints feature a wide range of flowers and plants: from the beautifully sculpted Aqua Rose, to the crêpe paper petals of a field poppy, to the more exotic-looking Black Parrot tulip.

The series’ style hints at a more classical period in photography, but with a contemporary feel: capturing the fine detail inherent in each flower, but also the subtleties of light, shade, texture and tone.

Mon, Thurs, Fri, Sat 10.00am-5.00pm;  Sunday 1.00pm – 5.00pm  (Closed on Tuesday and Wednesday)
